Gemini 3.8 Flash is Google's new workhorse. It launched at the same price as 3.7 Flash.

What changed

Google announced Gemini 3.8 Flash on 2 September 2026 as its most intelligent workhorse model yet for coding and agents, succeeding Gemini 3.7 Flash with significant gains in long-horizon software engineering, agentic tasks and multi-step reasoning in specialised domains such as finance and legal work. It launched at the same introductory API rate as 3.7 Flash, with the same step-up scheduled for 1 January 2027, and 3.7 Flash remains available. Google also introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber, a variant with frontier-level vulnerability detection and automated patching, restricted to trusted government authorities, critical infrastructure operators and software maintainers through its new Fairwind Program.

Why it matters

Because the newer model costs the same as the one it succeeds, the usual price-versus-quality trade is off the table again, exactly as it was when 3.7 Flash replaced 3.6 Flash three weeks earlier. The question is still whether the reported coding and reasoning gains show up on your own task before the shared rate steps up in January, not whether to pay more for them today.
