Adobe Firefly

Adobe's generative AI for images, video and audio, built to be commercially safe: its own models are trained on licensed and public-domain content rather than scraped from the open web.

What it does

Commercially safe image generation

Generate and edit images from a text prompt using Adobe's Firefly image models, trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public-domain content, so the output is designed for commercial use.

For work Marketing images, mockups and social visuals where the rights position has to be clean.

Generative editing

Fill, expand, remove and replace parts of an existing image with Generative Fill and Generative Expand, in the Firefly web app and across Photoshop and other Creative Cloud apps.

For work Fixing and extending real photos rather than generating everything from scratch.

Video and audio

Firefly includes a commercially safe generative video model and audio tools, producing short clips and sound from a prompt.

For work Short video and sound for social and marketing, with the same rights story as the images.

Choice of models

The Firefly app also lets you run selected partner models alongside Adobe's own, though only Adobe's models carry the commercial-safety guarantee.

For work Picking the right model for a look while knowing which output is rights-clean.

Best for

Marketers, designers and businesses who need generated images or video they can use commercially with a clear rights position, especially if they already use Creative Cloud.

Not for

Anything you would present as a real photograph of a real person or event, or work where a client expects photographed, human-made material.

Real work with it

A marketer or small-business owner

On-brand marketing images with a clean rights position

  1. Describe the image you need, matching your brand's look and colours.
  2. Generate options, then use Generative Fill or Expand to fix or extend the best one.
  3. Export it for your campaign.

Human checkpoint Check the image is honest and not misleading, fits the brand, and does not imply something untrue about your product before it goes out.

A designer

Extending a real photo to a new size

  1. Open the photo and use Generative Expand to add the space a new format needs.
  2. Regenerate the added area until it matches the original.
  3. Review the seams and details at full size.

Human checkpoint Look closely at the generated area for artefacts and anything that changes what the photo actually shows, especially if it documents something real.

The part that stays yours

'Commercially safe' covers the training data, not your judgement. Whether an image is honest, on-brand and not misleading, and whether it should be disclosed as AI-made, are still yours to decide.

When to pick something else

Midjourney

You want the most striking, stylised image quality and are willing to manage the rights and disclosure yourself.

ChatGPT or Gemini image generation

You are already in a general assistant and want quick images inside the same conversation.

Ideogram

You specifically need clean, legible text rendered inside the image, such as a poster or a logo mockup.

Watch-outs

  • 'Commercially safe' refers to how Adobe trained its own models. It is not a promise your specific use is legal: you still own the honesty, likeness and trademark checks.
  • Only Adobe's own Firefly models carry the commercial-safety guarantee. Partner models offered in the app do not, so know which model made an image.
  • Generative credits are limited by plan and refill monthly. Heavy use, especially video, can exhaust them, after which generations slow or cost more.
  • Generated images can contain artefacts, wrong details or implausible physics, so review at full size before publishing.
  • Pricing and credit allowances change, and a Premium tier for heavy video was still rolling out at review time, so confirm the current plan.
