Jess: Why is my mum's operation in your flat inspection notes?

    Adam: What?

Jess: “I just need you to sit in the car until I can go back in.” That's my voice note.

    Adam: You sent me that.

Jess: I know who I sent it to.

    Adam: It's a summary.

    Jess: Of what?

Adam: The things we keep getting stuck on.

Jess: Did you put our messages into an AI?

Adam: I wanted help talking to you.

    Jess: Which messages?

    Adam: Jess—

    Jess: Which ones?

    Adam: The whole chat.

Bit: That Wasn't Me, from The Human Bit.

Adam: I was going to tell you. That's why I printed it.

Jess: You said you'd made notes for us to look at.

    Adam: I did.

Jess: These are notes about me.

    Adam: They're about us.

Jess: “Jess may interpret practical suggestions as emotional withdrawal.”

Adam: There's a bit about me as well.

    Jess: Congratulations.

Adam: I didn't ask it to diagnose you.

    Jess: What did you ask?

Adam: How to talk about moving in without having the same argument again.

Jess: So you gave it the messages.

    Adam: Yes.

    Jess: And the voice notes?

Adam: I typed some of those out.

Jess: You sat and typed that one out?

Adam: I thought it needed the context.

Jess: I was in the hospital car park. I couldn't make myself get out of the car. I sent it because I wanted you there.

    Adam: I came.

Jess: I know. You sat with me. I remember that as a good thing.

Jess: Now it's here. Under a heading about how difficult I am to talk to.

Adam: That's not what the heading says.

    Jess: Read it out, then.

    Adam: Is that the agent?

Jess: Reminder. Three thirty. “Our next chapter.”

    Adam: I wrote that.

    Jess: Okay.

    Adam: I did.

    Jess: I said okay.

Adam: On Tuesday. When you came round after that event. We didn't do this.

    Jess: We didn't do what?

Adam: End up here. You told me what happened. I listened. You stayed.

    Jess: Yes.

Adam: I asked whether you wanted help sorting it out or whether you just wanted to tell me.

    Jess: I remember.

Adam: That was in the advice.

Jess: That was a good question.

Adam: It worked. Usually I'm halfway through telling you what you should have done before you've finished telling me what happened.

    Jess: You're quite fast.

Adam: And then you stop talking. And I think, brilliant, I've made that worse. Again.

Adam: I didn't know how to stop doing it.

Jess: You could have told me where the question came from.

Adam: I thought if I told you, the good bit wouldn't count.

    Jess: It counts.

Adam: It doesn't sound like it.

Jess: I liked being listened to. I didn't agree to have everything I said put in there.

Adam: I talk to my brother about us.

    Jess: I know.

    Adam: You talk to Sam.

    Jess: Yes.

Adam: Last month he asked what I thought I was bringing to the relationship. In a café. I was ordering a muffin.

Adam: You think I don't know when you've talked to him?

Jess: I shouldn't have sent him that argument.

    Adam: Sent it?

    Jess: Screenshots. A few.

Adam: You sent him my messages?

    Jess: Yes.

Adam: Did he get the messages before the argument? The bit where you changed the plan?

    Jess: No.

    Adam: Right.

    Jess: I was angry.

Adam: So was I. I thought that was why we needed help.

Jess: I don't want you to have nobody to talk to.

Adam: Then tell me what I'm supposed to do.

Jess: I don't know. Ask for help with what you're feeling. Start there. Why did it need everything I said in the last six months?

Adam: I didn't want to leave anything out.

    Jess: You have, though.

Adam: What have I left out?

Jess: Why you keep changing your mind about this flat.

Adam: I haven't changed my mind.

Jess: You sent me the link. I said yes. Then you started sending me places further out. Every time I ask if it's the money, you say you're just looking.

    Adam: I am looking.

Jess: We're going to stand in someone's kitchen in forty minutes and I don't know whether you want to be there.

Adam: I want to live with you.

    Jess: Okay.

Adam: I can't afford that flat. Not the way we said we'd split it.

    Jess: How much short?

    Adam: I don't know exactly.

    Jess: Adam.

Adam: I know. I know roughly.

Jess: I sent you what I earn. You sent me a place with a balcony.

Adam: I thought I'd have the agency work by now.

Jess: I thought you had it.

    Adam: It fell through.

    Jess: When?

    Adam: August.

    Jess: It's October.

    Adam: I've had other jobs.

Jess: That's not what I asked.

Adam: I thought I'd replace it before I had to tell you.

Jess: Why couldn't you tell me?

Adam: Because every time we talk about living together, you sound happy. And then I have to be the person who says, actually, could you pay more of the rent?

    Jess: You could have asked.

Adam: I didn't want you to have to decide that about me.

Jess: I was already deciding things about you. I thought you were trying to get out of it.

    Adam: I'm not.

Jess: Did you tell it about the agency job?

    Adam: No.

Jess: You gave it the hospital. And the argument with Sam. You didn't give it that?

Adam: I asked about how we talk to each other.

Jess: I thought you didn't want to live with me. You thought I'd judge you for being short of money. We've been having two different arguments.

    Adam: Maybe.

Jess: Did the notes help you tell me?

    Adam: I printed them instead.

    Jess: We should cancel.

    Adam: We can still look.

Jess: And then what? Pretend the balcony's the thing we're deciding?

Adam: It is a good balcony.

    Jess: I know.

Jess: I'm cancelling the viewing. I'm not saying we shouldn't live together.

    Adam: Okay.

Jess: Do you want to send it? You've been talking to her.

Adam: “We need to cancel today's viewing. Sorry for the short notice.”

    Jess: Yes.

    Adam: Done.

Adam: What do you want me to do with the chat?

Jess: Show me what you put in. Stop adding to it. Then we can look at what we can remove.

    Adam: I can delete it.

Jess: I don't know what that does to copies. Do you?

    Adam: No.

Jess: Let's find out before we say it's gone.

    Adam: And Sam?

Jess: I'll tell him I sent him half an argument and he doesn't get to treat that as knowing you.

    Adam: Thank you.

Jess: He'll still have an opinion. He's Sam.

Adam: Can I still ask for help writing something? If I don't put your messages in?

Jess: Yes. You can get help. I just want you to ask before you use mine.

Adam: I'm embarrassed about the money.

    Jess: I can hear that.

Adam: I don't need you to sort it out for me.

    Jess: Okay.

Adam: I need you to know that's why I keep sending the other flats.

    Jess: I know now.

    Jess: Have you eaten?

    Adam: No.

Jess: Is there anything in here apart from mugs?

    Adam: Pasta. Top shelf.

    Jess: Found it.

    Jess: What's that?

Adam: What's coming in. What I owe. What I can actually put towards the rent.

    Jess: That one's Friday?

    Adam: They said Friday.

Jess: Have they paid on time before?

    Adam: Once.

    Jess: Put maybe.

    Adam: It's not looking great.

Jess: We don't have to get the one with the balcony.

    Adam: You really liked it.

Jess: I liked the idea of us having somewhere. I also liked the balcony. Both things can be true.

Adam: There's a smaller one near the tram stop. It's got a window onto a wall.

    Jess: You're really selling it.

    Adam: Good wall.

Jess: Show me after we eat.
