Grok 4.5

xAI’s previous flagship for coding, agentic tasks and knowledge work. It remains available, but xAI released Grok 4.6 on 12 August 2026 and now recommends that as its most capable model; The Human Bit's lab now carries Grok 4.6 as its own entry.

The Human Bit position

If you are choosing today, test Grok 4.6 rather than 4.5, and only where coding or document production is already a measured bottleneck. A newer flagship is not a reason to migrate on its own.

Use it for

  • Engineering and coding evaluation
  • Agentic tool-using work
  • Office-document workflows in supported products
Leave it alone when

It is no longer the model xAI recommends for coding and chat; a new build should compare it against Grok 4.6 rather than start here.

Effort without the jargon

Configurable

The task has a clear correctness and cost scorecard that can show whether more reasoning pays.

Advanced recordCost, limits, privacy and operations

Grok publishes unusually clear API price, context and retention details; use those as planning inputs, then verify whether its reasoning and tools reduce total task cost.

API cost
Officially disclosedxAI prices Grok 4.5 in two context tiers: US$2 input and US$6 output per million tokens below 200,000 tokens, doubling to US$4 and US$12 at or above it, with cached input at US$0.30 and US$0.60. Long-context work therefore costs twice the headline rate, and tool and other service charges can be separate.

Data handling is a product decision

Officially disclosedxAI says API inputs and outputs are not used for training without permission and are retained for 30 days by default for abuse audit. Team-wide ZDR removes storage but disables stateful features.

Operational constraints

  • Current events require search tools; the base model has no live-event access.
  • Zero Data Retention disables stateful Responses, Files, Collections, Batch and deferred completions.
  • The stable and latest aliases can move; use a dated version where workflow consistency requires it.

Unknown means the cited official record does not disclose a safe value. It is not an estimate. Prices are provider list prices in USD where stated and can change before this record's review date.

Canonical provider claim

xAI's model catalogue now recommends Grok 4.6 for coding and chat and calls it the most intelligent and fastest model it has built; Grok 4.5 remains listed and available with its original pricing and limits unchanged.
